Improvisation and Trance Mask 3 Day Master Class
Steve Jarand has been making masks, playing with masks and improvising for over twenty years and is an inspirational teacher. He has worked closely with Keith Johnstone during this time and has continued to develop the mask work begun by Keith and George Devine at the Royal Court Theatre in the fifties and sixties. This workshop is a playful exploration of half & full masks and improvisation.
As performers it is a continual challenge to set aside the ego and create big characters that are very different to our social selves. But if it is not you, the performer, having to do this, if it is the mask that is being expressive and bold and new, then intellectual behavior can be set aside and spontaneous creativity can begin. By trying different masks in the process and finding one that works strongly for you the newly discovered mask character is then nurtured by giving it experiences and teaching it simple tasks. The mask itself is allowed to lead this process and intellectualizing is avoided. We then put masks together and let them teach each other how to behave. We can set up short scenarios and even give them text. When a mask is developed it can do almost anything onstage to the delight of the audience because it is a pure being, free from critique, free from being right.
Places are limited, please book early to avoid disappointment!
